Joy Miller

I grew up in Massachusetts, where the forests, coastlines, and ever-changing skies of New England shaped my earliest sense of place and home. Those landscapes are etched into my soul and still find their way into my work today. Spending the last decade and a half in Mississippi, however, has broadened my perspective, opening my practice into a more fluid, abstract language that continues to expand what "place" can mean to us.

In the studio, I aim for looseness and energy, allowing lines and layers to reveal the painting that wants to emerge.

My creative process begins with observation. Years of closely noticing the natural world have built a rich reservoir of imagery that I draw on for my paintings. Rather than capturing a single view of a specific location, I usually begin with an idea—often just one color, laid down as a wash or in gestural lines across an empty canvas. I then ask, What does it want? What colors are clamoring to join it? Each decision responds to the one before it, creating a lively dialogue of places, colors, memories, and marks.

My hope is that my paintings carry that same energy outward—that they invite people to look closely, linger a little longer, and lose themselves in the dance of lines and the conversation of colors.
